LaHug’s Captains 2019 – Round 20

0

There’s a very obvious VC this week that almost everyone will be going with. The two most important questions are then: Do you go against the grain in an attempt to win a league final? If the obvious fails, which of the many C options do we take?

VC Options – Round 20

Nat Fyfe

Last 3: 104, 154, 76 (111 avg)

Last 3 against Geelong: 114, 108, 162 (128 avg)

Last 3 at Perth: 76, 147, 129 (117 avg)

Fyfe’s certainly got a good ceiling and has great POD potential but I don’t trust his health right now or his ability to score big when his team is well beaten (which will probably be the case again this week). Prediction – 110

Patrick Dangerfield

Last 3: 99, 106, 163 (123 avg)

Last 3 against Fremantle: 94, 145, 138 (126 avg)

Last 3 at Perth: 100 (100 avg)

A couple of low weeks in a row have turned a lot of people off Danger and I think it’s right to be wary. If you want to be different though, he’s scored around the 140+ mark in recent matchups against the Dockers and it was only a few games ago he smashed a big 163. Plus, the Dogs mids scored very well against Freo last week. Prediction – 130

Max Gawn

Last 3: 133, 132, 117 (127 avg)

Last 3 against Richmond: 145, 151, 160 (152 avg)

Last 3 at MCG: 151, 153, 149 (151 avg)

An incredible obvious VC this week. Gawn is ludicrously good against the Tigers and ludicrously good at the MCG. I’ve been to the last few Richmond vs. Melbourne games and watched in awe and confusion as the Tigers bomb a scrappy ball into the forward line and Gawn takes a contested intercept mark. SUPERCOACH GOLD! It will happen again this week while I’m watching from the wing. Prediction – 150

Clayton Oliver

Last 3: 126, 140, 75 (114 avg)

Last 3 against Richmond: 105, 104, 115 (108 avg)

Last 3 at MCG: 158, 114, 114 (129 avg)

Oliver’s in some fine form and, once again, mids in Treloar and de Goey were able to score against the Tigers last week. Prediction – 120

Captain Options – Round 20

Brodie Grundy

Last 3: 117, 157, 137 (137 avg)

Last 3 against Gold Coast: 136, 77, 106 (106 avg)

Last 3 at MCG: 117, 145, 84 (115 avg)

So your VC has flopped and you’re not sure you can turn to Grundy after his disappointing effort last week? What if I told you that Grundy hasn’t scored under 120 in consecutive weeks all season? In fact, every time he’s scored below 120, he’s followed it up with a score above 130. Prediction – 130

Adam Treloar

Last 3: 123, 116, 125 (121 avg)

Last 3 against Gold Coast: 116, 131, 78 (108 avg)

Last 3 at MCG: 123, 100, 104 (109 avg)

Mids are good against the Suns. Treloar is good. Put two and two together and you get four! Prediction – 125

Patrick Cripps

Last 3: 152, 73, 115 (113 avg)

Last 3 against West Coast: 151, 103 (127 avg)

Last 3 at Docklands: 73, 78, 194 (115 avg)

I don’t know if I can trust a guy with the captaincy when he’s delivered two sub-80s in his last two games under the roof. He’s a great POD in that he can score 150+ again but I’m not going there. Prediction – 110

Elliot Yeo

Last 3: 128, 114, 116 (119 avg)

Last 3 against Carlton: 114, 94, 83 (97 avg)

Last 3 at Docklands: 115, 100, 105 (107 avg)

Yeo just continues to score well whether or not he gets opposition attention. His record against the Blues isn’t fantastic but I feel like he’s safe as houses for another score 115+. Prediction – 120

Dayne Zorko

Last 3: 125, 106, 122 (118 avg)

Last 3 against Bulldogs: 114, 121, 86 (107 avg)

Last 3 at Gabba: 106, 155, 85 (115 avg)

Zorko is the better of the two Lions mids again this week. He likes to play the Dogs and has recent form on his side. Prediction – 120

Jack Macrae

Last 3: 153, 120, 120 (131 avg)

Last 3 against Brisbane: 135, 156, 162 (151 avg)

Last 3 at Gabba: 162, 82 (122 avg)

Well done to those that went Macrae last week. He should be huge again this week against the Lions. What I really like about Macrae is that he can rack is up win or lose. He’s my C if Gawn flops. Prediction – 135

LaHug’s POD

Tim Kelly

Last 3: 108, 74, 97 (93 avg)

Last 3 against Fremantle: 155 (155 avg)

Last 3 at Perth: 90 (90 avg)

Step one: Look at what Macrae and co. did to the Dockers last week. Step two: Look at how well Tim Kelly did against Freo in his only game against them last year. Step three: Have a POD for a crucial finals matchup with a huge upside. Potential – 150+

LaHug’s Picks

Top 3 VCs

  1. Gawn
  2. A sneaky POD that plays before Gawn so you can still take Gawn if it flops

Top 3 Cs

  1. Gawn if you do a POD VC
  2. Macrae
  3. Grundy
  4. Treloar
