LaHug’s Captains 2018 – Round 2

0

Dusty was a great VC choice last week but, unfortunately for those of us that took his 139, Tom Mitchell came through with an even bigger 167. Don’t take too much out of it though – 139 in the bank is the right choice 9 times out of 10. This week, you have 6 matches to loophole from before Olango plays on Sunday and then Mitchell, Danger, and a player I’m starting to regret not picking can be the safe backups.

VC Options – Round 2

Dustin Martin

Last Week: 139 (139 avg)

Last 3 against Adelaide: 150, 93, 81 (108 avg)

Last 3 at AO: 121, 93, 84 (99 avg)

Dusty started many SC seasons on a high note with his 139 last week. He can obviously score well against the Crows, scoring 150 in the Grand Final, but I’m concerned about him at AO. Prediction – 120

Josh Kelly

Last Week: 116 (116 avg)

Last 3 against Collingwood: 147, 95, 62 (101 avg)

Last 3 at MCG: 113, 103, 86 (101 avg)

Kelly’s my pick of the bunch in what should be a high scoring game. He showed he was a good captains choice last year and he scored 147 against the Pies in their last matchup. Prediction – 125

Dayne Zorko

Last Week: 32 (32 avg)

Last 3 against Melbourne: 115, 113, 145 (124 avg)

Last 3 at Gabba: 109, 78, 86 (91 avg)

I’m a bit worried about how poorly Zorko handled the attention last week. VC only due to that risk but Zorko is a good choice due to his scoring history against the Dees. Prediction – 120

Lachie Neale

Last Week: 99 (99 avg)

Last 3 against Essendon: 93, 147, 138 (126 avg)

Last 3 at Perth: N/A

99 was a disappointing return from Neale but they did get smashed in Adelaide. What we’ve learned is that Fyfe will cop the tag this year and Neale should roam free. Considering he’s smashed the Dons before, I’m interested. Prediction – 125

Zach Merrett

Last Week: 17 (17 avg)

Last 3 against Fremantle: 135, 133, 128 (132 avg)

Last 3 at Perth: N/A

Assuming he’s named and over his concussion, Merrett’s your man this week. The Swans showed how easily you can score at the new Perth Stadium and Merrett’s history against the Dockers is incredible. Prediction – 130

Captain Options – Round 2

Luke Parker

Last Week: 149 (149 avg)

Last 3 against Port: 105, 127, 110 (114 avg)

Last 3 at SCG: 125, 119, 126 (123 avg)

Seeing nothing but tons in the stats breakdown makes me a happy owner of Parker this week. He loves to play the Power and loves to play at home. Great start of the year will likely continue. Prediction – 125

Patrick Dangerfield

Last Week: N/A

Last 3 against Hawthorn: 141, 90, 121 (117 avg)

Last 3 at MCG: 135, 101, 146 (127 avg)

If he weren’t coming off an injury, we’d all have Danger in our teams and all have him locked as C. If you do have him or you’re bringing him in this week, we should score well against the Hawks. That said, there are safer options this week. Prediction – 120

Gary Ablett

Last Week: 116 (116 avg)

Last 3 against Hawthorn: 146, 112, 159 (139 avg)

Last 3 at MCG: 116, 146, 127 (130 avg)

Dating back to 2011, Gary Ablett has 9 straight tons against the Hawks for an average of 152. The lowest in that time was last year’s 112. The next lowest is 138. Absolute lock. Prediction – 140

Tom Mitchell

Last Week: 167 (167 avg)

Last 3 against Geelong: 136, 85, 116 (112 avg)

Last 3 at MCG: 167, 128, 98 (131 avg)

If you don’t have GAJ, you simply have to rely on Mitchell again. He might not have a dominant history against the Cats like he does the Pies but his score last week was all the evidence I need that Mitchell is back for another big year. Prediction – 130

LaHug’s POD

Kade Simpson

Last Week: 150 (150 avg)

Last 3 against Gold Coast: 142, 84, 84 (103 avg)

Last 3 at Etihad: 110, 61, 82 (84 avg)

This one’s simple and a really good VC option if you want a leg up. Simpson scored 150 last week playing a role disturbingly similar to Docherty last year. The Tigers let him roam loose and I can’t see the Suns being any more effective. Prediction – 135
